September date confirmed for reopening of Mardyke Street as enhancement works proceed

Street enhancement works on Mardyke Street remain ongoing, with the thoroughfare due to reopen for public use on Thursday, September 28.

The street was due to reopen at the end of August but despite not meeting the initial target date, the local authority are satisfied with the progress made to date allowing for the poor weather which impacted during the summer season.

Traffic on Mardyke Street has been suspended since March to allow contractor John Cradock Ltd, the main contractor on the street enhancement project, conduct the necessary redevelopment works.

Intricate paving works presently ongoing on Mardyke Street, are part of the Athlone town centre public realm works which will also realise enhancements to Sean Costello Street, St Mary’s Square and Pump Lane.

Once the enhancement of Mardyke Street is complete, the section of Sean Costello Street to be pedestrianised (from Flannery’s Pub to the former Ulster Bank premises ) will then be closed to traffic.

Works will then be paused in December to minimise the impact on Christmas trade to businesses within the affected location.
