A series of public events continue to take place at Luan Gallery as August elapses.
The events are part of the accompanying outreach programmed around the current exhibition Athrú, an Invocation, a group exhibition at Luan Gallery that explores themes of climate change, sustainability, Irish ecology, and postcolonialism.
This programme forms part of phase one of Luan Gallery’s three-year strategy focusing on climate change, Irish ecology, biodiversity, and sustainability and is supported by Creative Ireland. This project aims to instigate meaningful engagement between artists, artwork, and the public in our county and on a national level.
The Athrú exhibiting artists will host a free online talk aimed at both the public and practicing visual artists covering various topics surrounding climate activism in the arts. The talk will take place with with Rosie O’Reilly on August 31, at 1pm.
Luan Gallery will also host community focused workshops engaging people with creative approaches to behavioural change. These workshops will be led by Rosie O’Reilly in August, and Teresa Dillon in early September. A Sustainable Arts Practice Discovery Day facilitated by artist Kari Cahill will take place on Sunday, August 27. The day will start off with foraging along The Golden Mile followed by a colour making workshop using the botanical discoveries, at Abbey Road Artists’ Studios. This workshop will demonstrate the basic methods and tools to create sustainable paint, ink, and pigment colour with natural and industrial materials. This workshop costs €30 and will include lunch. Booking in advance is essential are spaces are limited.
Athrú, an Invocation is a multi-disciplinary group show presenting work by Mark Clare, Teresa Dillon, and Rosie O’Reilly. Responding to the many ways in which biosystems, animal and plant lives have been affected by climate change across Ireland and beyond. Athrú, an Invocation draws our attention to the transformative potentiality that sustainable practices and behavioural change can invoke. Exhibiting artists utilise a wide array of natural materials including rushes and mycelium fungus and explore topics such as the extinction of indigenous Irish insect species, the lives of sea urchins affected by changing oceanic PH levels, and the life and death of the now extinct Irish Rannoch-Rush. The exhibition continues until September 3.
