Pharmacist tips on keeping family healthy and happy during summer holidays

CarePlus Pharmacy has compiled a list of family essentials for a stress-free getaway with children now that schools across the country have finished up for the summer.

Thousands of families are packing their bags for a break away, whether that is to a far off destination or here in Ireland. CarePlus Pharmacy is reminding parents of a number of health-related items that will make travelling a lot easier, particularly with little ones.

Suncream - top of the list is a good suncream. Whether your holiday is at home or abroad, Rebecca says it’s important to bring suncream that has a factor 50+ for both adults and children. She is also reminding parents to re-apply regularly when outside in the sun, especially after little ones being in the water. Also, seek shade during the hottest part of the day, wear long-sleeved, loose-fitting clothes that protect your skin as well as a broad-brimmed hat and wraparound sunglasses. It would also be worth having an aftersun or aloe vera gel to cool the skin after a day in the sun.

First aid kit - accidents can happen anywhere, so it pays to pack a small first aid bag with the essentials such as plasters, cotton wool, bandages and antiseptic wipes. It is also handy to have a small bottle of hand sanitiser in case of any spillages while on the road. Your community pharmacist can advise on the best kind of products to include for both your family and your destination.

Thermometer and paracetamol - any parent will know that children can often be struck down with a high temperature which can be caused by any number of reasons. It is helpful to have a basic thermometer on hand. Paracetamol, particularly the liquid format for children and babies, can help to reduce the temperature and pain.

Insect repellent - make sure you check what kind of insects are native to your holiday location well in advance. Specific vaccinations will be required for some destinations, while others require minimal precautions. If you’re using repellent, make sure you ask your pharmacist if it’s suitable for your whole family’s skin. It is also handy to have antihistamine tablets or creams and/or a mild steroid cream to treat insect bites, as well as heat rash or allergies, if they do occur.

Rehydration sachets - these are particularly useful if someone in the family is vomiting or has diarrhoea, as they help to replace any lost salts in the body. They’re also helpful for anyone who is feeling a bit woozy from too much sun.

Anti-inflammatories - always bring an anti-inflammatory, especially if it’s an active holiday, for any lumps or bumps that a child may get. Arnica is also great for helping to ease any bruises that may occur.
