Southern Gaels hosted four of their annual tournaments last week to mark hurling festival week in celebration of the club’s 50th anniversary.
On Friday last they commenced competition with the Under 9 Darren O’Donnell hurling tournament in which they played St Brigid’s of Rochfortbridge, this exciting game ending in a draw. This was followed by the Under 10 Corcoran Cup, a camogie contest with St Brigids again providing the opposition. Again, the sides finished level after an entertaining game.
Next up were the Under 13 players who competed against St Brigid’s in the Artie Pyke tournament. This game was won by Southern Gaels in a dramatic conclusion with a goal in the final attack securing a one point victory. Following the game’s conclusion, Marie Pyke presented Southern Gaels with the trophy on behalf of the Pyke family.
The final game of the evening saw Roscommon Gaels adult camogie side defeat Southern Gaels in a camogie challenge. Thanks to all who officiated at and organised all the games.
Earlier in the week, Under 11 and Under 15 hurling tournaments were held. The Under 11 side enjoyed a very entertaining match full of skilful endeavour against Castletown Geoghegan, while Roscommon Gaels overcame the Under 15 side in an enjoyable encounter.
Road Hurling
The club also hosted a very successful road hurling competition with action taking place from Coosan National School to Coosan Point and back. The elite event was won by Eanna Holland and Fionn and Sean Dowd, while success in the family event was achieved by the Tiernan family of Grainne, Gerard, Eala and Sean Óg. Thanks to Michael O’Connell, the main organiser of this competition.
Talent Show
The inaugural club junior talent show was held on Thursday last. There were over 30 participants with singing, ballet, musical, dancing and many other performances, Jane McCourt being the overall winner.
Thanks to Mayor Louise Heavin who was a wonderful judge, Caoimhe O’Connell, the organiser, and Paul Connaughton who provided the sound.
