Athlone’s Grow mental health service completed their annual Yellow Walk in the environs of the Shannon Weir in recent times.
The event, which takes place annually, saw a surge in support locally as many afforded assistance to promoting the work of Grow. The service hosts supports groups in Athlone and is always aspiring to do more in the town.
“While the event is about raising a funds and creating awareness, it is the awareness that is most important at the moment. Many people need help every now and then, and unfortunately, many may not be aware of what we do, how we do it and from where we conduct our work, but we are actively working to change that," local co-ordinator, John Madden, said.
The event was mirrored across the country in cities, towns and villages, attracting the attention of many on social media who saw the Yellow Walk hashtag feature across all major platforms. The walk was well received as the group donned their yellow t-shirts and sustained the good cheer from the first to the final step, the walk concluding at dusk with the sun setting over St Peter and Pauls in a somewhat symbolic gesture, noting that although the day was ending, tomorrow may be even better and filled with hope.
Grow operates in the Family Resource Centre on Monday mornings from 11am to 1pm and on Wednesdays in the National Learning Network in Belhavel from 7pm to 9.30pm. New members are always welcome.
