Nua Healthcare Services, Ireland’s leading private provider of community-based residential care services for children and adults with disabilities and/or mental health disorders and associated complex needs, has developed a series of FREE online courses and tools focused on supporting caregivers in Westmeath by increasing their general knowledge, regardless of current skill levels and/or experience.
The courses, which cover topics such as intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, global developmental delay, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, acquired brain injury, mental health difficulties in children, adolescents, and adults, and supporting the caregiver through self-care, have been developed by Nua’s highly competent multidisciplinary team members, including senior clinical psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and behaviour specialists.
Each course introduces a specific disability or mental health diagnosis by discussing its main clinical features and how they impact functioning throughout an individual’s life. It concludes with some useful information and tips on how to better support the individual.
“We are delighted to launch our Caregiver Empowerment Programme. We truly hope this programme is received in the spirit intended, as a resource for social workers and allied healthcare professionals to make available to caregivers, so that they, in turn, are empowered with the competencies to better understand and thereafter support the individuals they care for. The content has taken our team members several months to pull together and will be accessible via a bespoke online management system to help caregivers easily access and manage their course content anywhere at any time.
“In the context of our work, we have seen first-hand the difficulties some caregivers face, the unfortunate consequence for individuals with intellectual disabilities and/or mental health conditions who go undiagnosed and do not receive the necessary early interventions. Although we are not expected to, and indeed, we cannot support everyone in need, we do wish to help our communities and national healthcare system through FREE access to our Caregiver Empowerment Programme, which we intend to continue developing for the betterment of everyone over the coming years. It is a privilege to be part of an organisation that really does live their Mission, Vision and Values and who aspires to do better not only for the individuals who avail of and deliver our services, but also for the communities we all belong to,” said Ita Forde, Director of Services at Nua Healthcare.
