Niall Murray deservedly claims two end of season Connacht Rugby accolades

Niall Murray was honoured with two awards at the Connacht Rugby end of season gala held last Saturday, the Buccaneers clubman claiming the ‘Try of the Year’ award and also capturing the ‘Fans Favourite’ trophy.

It culminates a splendid season for the 23 year old south Roscommon lock who was recently named on the United Rugby Championship Elite XV for the current season . Murray has made 56 senior appearances for the province and he was one of three players who featured in the documentary “Relentless – The Connacht Way”. Congratulations Niall on your richly deserved accolades.

Buccaneers Summer Camps

Two rugby camps for boys and girls aged 7 to 12 years are being held at Buccaneers RFC this summer. Supported by SMITH’S SUPERVALU MONKSLAND, the five-day camps take place from Monday, July 10 to Friday, July 14 and also from Monday, August 14 to Friday, August 18, from 9.30am to 12.30pm each day.

No previous rugby playing experience is necessary and kids will learn new skills in a fun environment whilst making friends and keeping fit. Registration is €80 per week with discounts for additional family members. This is considerably better value than other rugby camps in Athlone! To register, email [email protected].

Tag Summer League

The annual Laya Summer Tag league begins in earnest on Thursday and will continue until late July at Dubarry Park. There will be two divisions this summer, Premier and Social/Corporate. You can register a team or as an individual. Teams of seven players from a mixed squad of up to 15 members can participate in this fun sport. Rolling substitutions are allowed but three females must be on pitch at all times and tries scored by the ladies earn bonus points.

Entry fee, which is set by Connacht Rugby, is €600 for a squad which equates to just €5 per player per week. Log on to www.connachtrugby.ie/tag to register and/or obtain further information about this fun league where no previous rugby playing experience is necessary.

Food Award for The Bounty Bar & Venue

The Bounty Bar & Venue has been named Leinster ‘Gastro Pub of the Year’ in the ‘The Food Awards Ireland 2023’ which celebrates the best of the country’s food industry. The awards recognise excellence and showcase the best food establishments that Ireland has to offer. Mixed Ability Tournament on June 10

An All-Ireland Mixed Ability Rugby Tournament takes place at Dubarry Park on Saturday, June 10. With teams from all four provinces participating, it is anticipated that several hundred will be playing so the Athlone venue will be buzzing from 1pm well into the evening when entertainment will follow the day’s on-field Round Robin action.

Golf Classic

Buccaneers Rugby Football Club will host its annual Golf Classic at the panoramic Glasson Lakehouse course on Tuesday, July 25.
