3M, an American conglomerate with a manufacturing base in Athlone, creating medical equipment like face masks, have announced a culling of 6,000 positions in the company on a global scale.
The planned reduction in staff numbers was announced on Tuesday, April 25, via a statement on the company’s website, outlining the ‘restructuring changes’ that the conglomerate will introduce over the coming weeks and months as company sales have continued to fall.
In the statement announcing the reduction, 3M CEO, Mike Roman said that these ‘restructuring actions’ are intended to “make 3M stronger, leaner and more focused.
“These restructuring actions are expected to affect all functions, businesses, and geographies and will impact approximately 6,000 positions globally, in addition to the reduction of 2,500 global manufacturing roles announced in January 2023.”
The statement went on to say that the job losses are, “Expected to meaningfully reduce costs and drive long-term improvement in margins and cash flow while enabling a more efficient and effective structure for driving long-term growth.”
3M has two bases in Ireland, a manufacturing base in Athlone and a premises in Dublin, and it is yet unknown about how the news will impact workers in these sites
