Another first for Scoil na gCeithre Máistrí, following the successful introduction of hot meals in the school this year, with the launch of “Kayak le Cairde”, an in-school kayaking club for pupils and parents in the school.

The sun shone down as pupils from the two sixth classes took to the sparkling waters of Coosan Point last Thursday morning and tried their hand at this exciting outdoor adventure.

While the wind did it’s best to confine the brave paddlers to shore nothing was going to stop this determined group from giving it a good go and get as far from the banks as possible and once the calmer waters on the far side of the jetty were reached the learning took off and all of the skills of this sport were on display.

It is planned to do a five/six-week programme allowing the children to achieve Level 1/2 in the kayaking certification process that is being followed by the club which is officially affiliated with Canoeing Ireland. By the end of the programme, it is hoped that all participants will be able to undertake the more challenging adventure of a river trip and all through the medium of Irish - exciting times ahead.
