Eight former Marist College students received 2022 UCD Entrance Scholarships at an awards ceremony held recently.
This represents 10 percent of the Marist Leaving Certificate class of 2022 awarded scholarships in UCD. Mr Kelly, Deputy Principal, joined Brian Connell, David Dolan, Odhran Dolan, Eoghan Duffy, Cian McCarthy, Fionn McDonnell and Thomas O’Brien in celebrating this prestigious occasion. Also receiving this award, but absent from the ceremony, was Rory Kilgarriff.
The requirement for this award is to achieve a minimum of 560 points in the Leaving Certificate examinations. Congratulations to our recipients and best of luck in future studies.
Marist Museum – History Display
George Orwell famously said that “the most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.” All second year students in Marist College were asked to collect a little bit of their history from their locality and display it for the wider school community.
Locality could be any connection to the students’ family’s history, local area, or other historical connections. The collection of exhibitions ranged from medals of honour to vintage basketball jerseys.
The purpose of this display on the surface was another CBA for Junior Cycle History, ‘The Past in My Place’ but actually the reasoning behind the day ran much deeper. We have a great appreciation of history here in this school which is one of the oldest in Athlone, and this day gave students a chance to show off a bit of their heritage and identity.
All Ireland Schools Final Swimming
Congratulations to the school’s swimmers who picked up medals at the All Ireland Schools Finals recently. Andrew Henson, Sean O’Neill, Eoin Lynam and Kolm O’Regan achieved second place in the 200m freestyle relay, while Andrew, Sean and Eoin, along with Christian O’Brien, came third in the 200m medley relay.
Rugby 7s Tournament
Well done to the Marist junior rugby team who went unbeaten in the Connacht Schools Junior Rugby 7s end of year tournament. The team travelled to Creggs RFC and faced Calasanctius College, Clarin College, Rice College and Garbally.
The Junior Rugby League final is now fixed for April 27 in Creggs RFC. All support welcome.
