Barriers erected as road closure marks first phase of public enhancement works

A road closure at Mardyke Street which was implemented this week in the heart of Athlone town centre will remain in place until the end of August.

Barriers to close off Mardyke Street from traffic flow were erected on Tuesday morning, but pedestrian access to businesses along this route remains in place. Local access for deliveries and services is to be facilitated.

The five-month road closure is to facilitate initial phase construction works being undertaken by John Cradock Ltd, the company appointed by the local authority to complete the Athlone Town Centre Public Realm Enhancement project.

The project, which will be ultimately realised in March 2024, will cost over €4 million, includes the pedestrianisation of a section of Sean Costello Street, between Mardyke Street and Flannery’s Pub.
