Féile Ceoil na Scoileanna returns after a three year absence, the 55th version of the festival to take place in the Dean Crowe Theatre from Monday, March 20 to Wednesday, March 22.
With two nightly performances and two matinée showings, the children’s festival of music, song, drama and dance is non-competitive and primary school children from Athlone and across the Midlands are invited to take part.
The aim of the Féile is to promote Irish music, song and dance while embracing the many other cultures and traditions athat are now an integral part of our schools. The Féile Ceoil enables schools to share in and enjoy the performances of other groups, free from the stress of competition.
This year Jean Farrell will officially open the Féile on Monday, March 20. Jean has lived in Athlone all her life and taught in St Mary’s NS for 40 years with her first acting experience took place on the stage of the Dean Crowe Theatre. The building was then known as St Peter’s Hall. A playwright, her play ‘The Six Marys’ has been performed all over Ireland and the UK.
Féile Ceoil na Scoileanna is organised by a voluntary committee of teachers, retired teachers and a former education inspector. The children are prepared in school by their teachers, music teachers and special needs assistants. Parents play an active role in preparing and supporting their children for the performances.
