Westmeath County Council issues warning about bogus text message

Westmeath County Council have posted a message on their social media earlier today issuing a warning to tenants about a bogus text message currently circulating.

The message reads:

The council have become aware that a bogus text message was sent to a member of the public purporting to be from the council and claiming that they are in rent arrears.

Their advice is that if you receive a similar message, report it to gardaí.

People are advised not to click any links in such a message; and not to give any personal information such as bank account or PPS numbers.

What you should do if if you receive a similar message is contact the council to confirm whether the contents of the text are genuine.
