Buccaneers Rugby Football Club hosted a 5km Fun Run on New Year’s Day to raise much needed funds for both the underage section of the club and St Hilda’s Special School in Athlone.
Starting at The Bounty, the run took a circular relatively flat route around Coosan. Almost 200 runners, including many families, participated and accordingly a generous amount was raised, shared equally between the two organisations.
It was a most encouraging first run and looks sure to become an annual event whereby people can generate welcome funds whilst getting a bit of exercise in the open air after the Christmas and New Year indulgences. The club thanks all who took part and also, of course, the various volunteers/stewards who ensured the smooth organisation on the day.
Buccaneers RFC recently presented a cheque to St Hilda’s, who provide comprehensive quality services to people with various intellectual disabilities. The cheque was presented by Lorna Stuart-Trainor, the club’s Junior Vice-President, and Geraldine Kenny, club administrator, to Maeve Lonergan on behalf of St Hilda’s Special School for whom Katie Henshaw, Anne Greene and Sheila Buckley-Byrne were among those also attending.
