Southern Gaels Under 19s 0-12

The annual Maher Cup Tournament was played recently between the club’s Intermediate and Under 19 teams.

The Under 19s won the 2022 Westmeath Division Two Championship and were anxious to pit their skills against their more illustrious clubmates, the game taking place in the Athlone Pairc Chiaráin GAA grounds amid a continual downpour, the standard of hurling was exceptional.

Local rivalry added spice to the encounter and assured a great night’s entertainment. The younger players raced into the lead with well taken points from Cian McCarthy, Sean Murphy and Cian Geary. However, Sean Dowd kept the Intermediate side in touch with a number of pointed frees and a well taken goal from Fionn Dowd set up the older players for a half time lead of 1-8 to 0-8.

The second half was well contested with the Under 19s getting back into the game with points from Chulainn Dowd and Eoin Hardiman. However, a second Fionn Dowd goal set the older more experienced side on the path to victory.

After the game, club chairperson and referee on the night, Kevin Jordan, presented Intermediate captain, Seamus Hoctor, with the cup.
