Tag rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in Ireland and it has taken Mullingar by storm this year. In the second year of tag at Mullingar RFC, there has been a huge increase in the number of players turning up. This gives the club every reason to celebrate and so they invite everyone to join them on their first official social night - a 90s disco following tag games this Friday June 5.
Mullingar Tag has 16 teams playing and fielding up to 15 players per team. The huge numbers of over 250 people per week turning out is a testament to how the word has spread in the area. Some initiative and active ‘sales work’ paid dividends with a huge turnout for a month of organised ‘playing Tag Rugby for free’ at the club. It has brought the success of having two leagues, a ‘mixed social beginners’ and ‘mixed social grade c’ for the more experienced teams.
The social side of things is a large part of what Tag is all about and there is plenty of fun for all. Tag rugby is ideal as a form of rugby competition in itself or as a social form of the game with both men and women playing together. There is a BBQ every night after tag at Mullingar RFC with a large number staying on to dissect the games.
Mullingar RFC hosts its first official social night of this season with a 90s disco following tag games on Friday June 5. So it is time to root through the wardrobe and take out those MC Hammer pants, X Works jeans, that checked or paisley shirt, hypercolour t-shirts, and stir up some nostalgia. The great debate of whether Blur or Oasis were your favourite band can be started again! All are welcome and all are being encouraged to come to what will be a fun social event.
The summer league commenced on May 22 and runs for 10 weeks until the end of July. A fancy dress night will be held on Friday June 26 and the finals celebration night on Friday July 24.
Players are still needed and no experience is required, so come out and enquire about joining a team. You can find details by searching for Mullingar Tag Rugby on facebook or by emailing [email protected].
Mulingar Tag Rugby has over 10 weeks of a weekly get-together at their venue and the growth of the popularity of the sport surprises few. It’s easy to see why there is no better way to hit the pitch over the summer months than the Official IRFU Tag Rugby programme, Bud Light Tag, at Mullingar RFC.
