Prior to Saturday night’s defeat of Galway United in the FAI women’s national league, Athlone Town manager, Tommy Hewitt, stated that his team would require a “miracle” if they are to claim the league title this season, but the dream is still very much alive with one round of fixtures remaining to play this weekend.
A goal from Muireann Devaney was sufficient to achieve victory in Lissywollen on Saturday evening and maintain pressure on the league leaders, Shelbourne, who remain two points clear of Athlone Town as Saturday evening’s fixtures await.
Athlone Town travel to the capital to play Bohemians in their final league fixture. Should they defeat Bohs and a draw is the outcome of the Wexford Youths/Shelbourne game, then Athlone and Shelbourne will meet in a play-off to decide the destination of the league title.
It has been a major season of progress for Athlone Town in the women’s national league with 17 wins from their 26 games played to date. One more victory, coupled with the required result in Wexford on Saturday evening, and the miracle might just be realised!
