Soroptimist International Athlone marks significant charter milestone anniversary

To mark the 60th anniversary of the Soroptimist International Athlone club charter, the dynamic organisation installed a bench at Athlone Regional Sports Centre in recognition of those who support wellbeing and encourage friendships.

The members also planted an oak tree to mark the centenary of Soroptimist International in the urban forest and wildlife area to highlight our work on climate change.

Soroptimist International is a friendship and service organisation for women. The members work on projects to enable, empower and educate women and girls, locally and internationally.

National projects include the Soroptimist International Girls’ public speaking competition that is organised annually by all the clubs in Ireland, both north and south. All the local secondary schools in Athlone take part each year. Other project topics include Climate Change, Safe Home that focused on advocating for better supports for victims of domestic abuse and coercive control.

Local projects include support for Esker House Women’s Refuge, New Horizon Refugee and Asylum Seeker Support, Meals on Wheels and the Samaritans.

As the organisation celebrats their anniversary, Soroptimist International Athlone want to thank the people of the town for their generous support over the past 60 years.
