Athlone Town senior women’s football team remain firmly in contention for coveted league silverware this season following a deserved home victory over reigning champions Shelbourne on Saturday evening.
This eagerly anticipated televised encounter certainly did not disappoint and with end of season honours firmly on the minds of all the players and management involved, a closely contested affair ensued.
Under early pressure from Shelbourne, Athlone soon gained in game composure and started to exert authority on proceedings in the second half, their dominance finally rewarded just after the hour mark when Scarlett Herron headed home a Kellie Brennan centre.
The first goal provider was to add the Lissywollen team’s second goal a mere four minutes later stooping to head in the rebound after Emily Corbet’s cross had come back out off the Shelbourne crossbar and although the visitors emptied their bench looking for a way back in to the contest, Athlone held firm to play themselves into the title mix which is becoming a genuine four-horse race.
With a mood of positivity now clearly evident amongst the management and players, Athlone Town enter this week’s Evoke WNL cup semi-final brimming with confidence as reigning champions Wexford Youths journey to Lissywollen for what promises to be a tight knockout tussle.
Supporters are encouraged to give of their support and descend upon the Athlone Town Stadium in Lissywollen for this cup tie, the kick off for which is 4.55pm.
