A double strike from Dylan Jinks and a headed finish from Michael Harrington ensured Monksland United started their CCFL Senior Division campaign with a comprehensive victory over Mullingar Town at a rain lashed Cushla Park on Sunday morning.
With numerous CCFL fixtures falling victim to the incessant precipitation, the vast green swathe of Cushla Park was declared playable and Monksland set the tone for their winning performance exerting early dominance which resulted in Harrington powering home a header from a corner kick as the first half progressed.
Conditions proved problematic at times for both teams but a more focused home team added to their lead prior to the half time break when a piercing pass from Reece Moran placed JInks in the clear and he finished to the corner of the net.
Monksland continued in a similar vein in the second half and a third goal sealed the victory, Jinks latching on to a Stephen Francis pass and lobbing the onrushing goalkeeper much to the delight of his teammates and the supporters present.
Monksland will be hoping that their winning start to the season continues when they host Kilree Celtic in the first round of the O’Neill’s LFA Junior Cup, kick off at 12pm.
