Naughten seeks to have new Army HQ in Athlone

Local Independent Deputy, Denis Naughten, is seeking to have the proposed new army headquarters based at Custume Barracks in Athlone.

Deputy Naughten believes Athlone would be the perfect location for this key command within the Defence Forces.

Questioning the Minister for Defence in the Dáil, Deputy Naughten sought to have the new army headquarters, which have been recommended in the Commission on the Defence Forces, based out of Custume Barracks in Athlone.

Responding, Minister Coveney confirmed that the Commission had recommended a new structure for the Defence Forces and that he intended to bring a high-level plan of action to Government in the coming weeks.

“Many people felt very hurt that Athlone lost its Brigade status in the past and establishing the newly proposed army headquarters at Custume Barracks would go some way to addressing it,” Deputy Naughten asserted.
