Galway and Portumna hurling legend Joe Canning presented five sets of medals to club juvenile stars in the Sheraton Hotel last Saturday. The club captured titles at Under 13, 15 and 17 in 2020 and at Under 13 and 17 in 2021. There was a large attendance of players, parents, supporters and club officials at the function which was a most enjoyable night.
Castletown Geoghegan 2-17 Southern Gaels 1-13
Castletown Geoghegan travelled to Athlone to play local side Southern Gaels and secured the two points from this league game. Gaels led for most of the game but the visitors scored two goals within two minutes midway through the second half to secure victory.
With Gaels relying on Sean Dowd for scores from play and placed balls they found other scores hard to come by. Wing back Cian Geary added three points from play in an excellent performance. Jonathan Keogh was ever reliable throughout, as was Diarmuid Martin and Killian Coyle in defence. Evan Farrell scored a well taken goal for the home side but the momentary lapses in defence cost them dearly in the end. However, the side is showing excellent improvement this year and should be in the hunt for honours as the year progresses.

Last man standing
Southern Gaels has launched a last man standing competition run on the All-Ireland Hurling Championship. There is a prize of €150 for the winner who correctly predicts a team the wins each week up to the final itself. Entry forms are available from club members and cost €5.
Over 40s hurling
Well done to Patrick Flynn, Willie Quigley and Eoin Crosbie who represented Westmeath in the Over 40s Social Hurling Tournament held in Dublin recently.
Go Games
Last week Southern Gaels made the long trip to Cullion outside Mullingar for the first round of Under 7 and 9 Go Games. They had 21 players who travelled and played four games. They all fully enjoyed their first tournament of the year. Thanks to all the parents who travelled with the young aspiring hurlers.
Condolences to club mentor Cormac Ó Sullibháin on the recent sudden death of his partner Annie Tubman. May she rest in peace.
