Athlone Tidy Towns Committee is requesting the support of local community groups, residents’ associations, householders, families and individuals as the annual clean initiative takes place on Good Friday, April 15.
“We are requesting that members of our local community devote an hour or two to attend to their immediate vicinity, pick litter and tidy up any unsightly spots on nearby lanes and roads,” said Gerry Johnson, Athlone Tidy Towns chairperson.
“This will greatly assist the many loyal volunteers, who help us out every week to keep Athlone neat and litter free. Athlone has been officially entered into the All of Ireland Best Kept Large Town competition and adjudication will be held in mid-May so we would like to have our town presented well for this event.
“We would ask you to carry out the task during the morning time, weather permitting. Green bags and pickers will be provided, on request, through the Athlone Tidy Towns Facebook page, by email at [email protected] or to any members of the Tidy Towns committee.
“When finished your task, you can drop off the collected litter at the following locations before lunch time on that same day - bus stop near Valleycourt; Grace Park Road (Opposite St Hildas ); entrance to Mayfield Grove; outside the Athlone Training Centre Garrycastle; One Mile (opposite entrance to Sli an Aifreann ); top of Talbot Avenue; car park at the top of Pearse Street; Canal Banks; opposite Shines pub and restaurant; and Ardbrae Park entrance.
“Committee members will then pick up these green bags for their final disposal.”
