Local Councillors afforded their full support towards the Ukraine cause during the most recent sitting of the Athlone-Moate Municipal District.
Speaking prior to the formal start of the District meeting within the surrounds of the Athlone Civic Centre chamber, Deputy Mayor, Cllr Aengus O’Rourke stated that Europe now faced an “uncertain prospect” following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“This invasion by Russia of Ukraine is utter thuggery and the work of a bully in Vladimir Putin who is determined to inflict pain and heartache on the Ukraine nation.
“We are unsure as to how long this invasion will proceed but the images we were seeing on our television screens on a regular basis gives cause for much concern.
“We are 100 percent behind the Ukraine people and as a local authority will support any refugees who come our way. I can assure you that we will be ready to assist in anyway possible if our help is required,” Cllr O’Rourke asserted.
The Athlone Deputy Mayor proceeded to present the Ukraine flag to local authority members and executive with the intention that it be flown alongside the Irish tricolour in a show of solidarity with the east European nation.
