‘Imelda’s Idols’ to the fore in Ladies Winter League final at Athlone Golf Club

The highlight of the golfing week in Hodson Bay was the final of the Ladies Winter League which was very generously sponsored by The Corner House Bistro.

The sun shone brightly on a crisp March morning as 45 intrepid finalists prepared to do battle for the accolade of Winter League Champions 2022, the winners to be decided from the nett scores over 12 holes of the three best players on each team.

After an enthralling final, the winners with a combined score of 70 points were Imelda’s Idols. The jubilant team members were Imelda Sheeran (Captain ), Noirin O’Rourke, Deirdre Connolly, Jean McGowan and Ber Kenny.

Coming in just four points behind as runners-up with a great score of 66 points were Rhona’s Revellers. The team members of the Revellers were Rhona Fitzgerald (Captain ), Yvonne Walsh, Deirdre Brosnan and Paula McClean.

The leading qualifier of the Winter League was Catherine Fitzgerald. At the presentation ceremony afterwards, Lady Captain Frances McGettigan presented the winners with their prizes and thanked the Corner House Bistro for their very generous sponsorship.

Captains’ Drive In

Captains, Frances McGettigan and Thomas O’Connor, are eagerly looking forward to their Drive-In this coming Sunday. The actual Drive-In is scheduled for 4pm and will be preceded by a Scramble, the timesheet for which is now open. There will be a Shotgun start at 10am and competitors are asked to be at the club at 9.20am to ensure they are at their starting tee on time. The entry fee incorporates a hot meal afterwards in the club restaurant.

Kevin’s ‘Better the Score’

There is just one week left now for members to earn their place in the St Patrick’s Day play-off of P.G.A. Professional Kevin Grealy’s annual winter competition. The magical score to hit is 32 points over 15 holes to be in with a chance to make the cut.

The Shamrock Golf Open presented by Caffrey’s Furniture

The Ladies and Gents Open Shamrock competition will be held from Thursday, March 17 to Sunday, March 20. This year’s competition will be over 18 holes stableford and is proudly presented by Caffrey’s Furniture and Mattress Micks.

Entry fee for visitors is €20 with re-entry on succeeding days €15. The timesheet for booking is available online at www.athlonegolfclub.ie

Condolences

There was a palpable sense of grief in the club when news filtered through of the unexpected passing of Honorary member, Madeline Quinn, last week.

Madeline was the wife of retired Golf Professional Martin Quinn. Madeline, along with Martin, ran the Golf Shop in Hodson Bay for nearly 40 years.

A lady of immense charm and personality, She had a great sense of style and was known far and wide for the high quality golf fashion she stocked.

Madeline was laid to rest after requiem mass in the Church of the Risen Christ, Ballybay. Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam dilis.
