His third consecutive season at the managerial helm, Tommy Hewitt is striving for further on field progression as the Athlone Town women’s team prepare to commence their national league campaign on Saturday night.
Wexford Youths provide the opening round of fixtures opposition in Lissywollen (kick off, 7pm ) and the former Athlone Town player noted his season aspirations as he spoke with the Athlone Advertiser on Tuesday morning.
“It is an honour to be at the managerial helm for a third consecutive season and hopefully, we can continue to progress in the season to come. Women’s football is gaining much public traction at this time and within the club we believe that we are in a positive place as the season commences,” Tommy asserted.
With a number of experienced players added to the playing squad in the close season, Tommy is hopeful that his charges can compete with the regular standard bearers of the division.
“We have a smaller squad in comparison to previous seasons but one that is now laden with quality and experience. We are now an established club at this level and hopefully this will be reflected on the pitch as the season progresses
“As a club we have our definitive goals for the season to come - to take points off the elite clubs within the division and to strongly compete against those teams who are on a similar playing level to Athlone Town,” Tommy enthused.
The current cup holders Wexford Youths provide the opposition in Lissywollen on Saturday night, a team who are familiar with achieving honours at this level.
“We have to play such teams as the season progresses so we welcome Wexford Youths to the Athlone Town Stadium this weekend and hopefully we will be able to replicate our positive end of 2021 season form and build momentum for the games to come,” Tommy continued.
As noted, this is the Athlone native’s third consecutive season overseeing matters from the sideline and he is revelling in his role as team manager.
“It has been great to witness the progression of this team since the start of the 2020 season and I do believe that the club is in a better position now that it was when we started our footballing journey.
“The team has vast potential to further progress and with a strong underage structure now in place at the club I am firmly of the view that a positive future awaits for the Athlone Town women’s team,” Tommy concluded.
