New video highlights Athlone as ideal girls’ getaway destination

The new video from Destination Athlone entitled highlights the medieval Shannonside town as an ideal location for a girls’ getaway.

Athlone ticks all the boxes – luxurious spas, a wide choice of accommodation and the best shopping the midlands has to offer. Newly launched network, Athlone Food Circle, highlights the quality and choice of dining options.

It is just a short journey by train or car from Dublin and Galway so perfectly positioned for a short break with friends. Destination Athlone’s slogan – ‘At the Heart of It’ – truly describes the town. The Girls’ Getaway video is available on social media, both on the athlone.ie website and on YouTube.

Shopping is an essential element in any weekend away and ‘Girls’ Getaway’ features both high street brand names in Athlone’s two smart shopping centres and traditional Burgess department store, the oldest in Ireland with a history dating back to the 1700s.

Don’t be misled by its age, Burgess constantly has something new to offer. Most recently, they have launched The Village at Burgess, an indoor laneway of eight independent shops accessed from both street and store. High street stores in the shopping centres include Zara, H&M, JD’S, Tommy Hilfiger, Marks & Spencer, Primark and Carraig Donn.

One of the best things about a weekend in Athlone is convenience. Visitors can park up the car on arrival and go everywhere on foot during their stay. Several of the hotels are right in the town core beside shopping, pubs, cafes, restaurants and attractions. Others are self-contained oases in glorious locations like Glasson or Hodson Bay.

There’s even a novel water taxi to and from the town centre making out of town locations totally accessible. Most hotels have excellent spas and great offers for the Christmas season. Sirana Spa at the Sheraton Hotel is featured in the video. The hotel opens directly into Athlone Towncentre so retail therapy is available no matter what the weather.

Athlone’s medieval heart, overlooked by the ancient Castle, is a warren of atmospheric streets rich with award-winning cafés, pubs and restaurants. The girls in the video choose the Corner House Bistro for a coffee, dinner at ethnic Kin Khao which has been noticed even by the Michelin judges, and cocktails in trendy Maisie’s where cocktails are order of the day.
