Storm Barra makes detrimental impact in South Westmeath communities

The impact of Storm Barra has been witnessed at a local level with many South Westmeath communities subject to power outages and fallen trees as the weather rapidly deteriorated late on Tuesday night and into the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Speaking to the Athlone Advertiser on Wednesday, local Fianna Fáil Councillor, Vinny McCormack, noted that South Westmeath appeared to bear the brunt if Storm Barras in the Midlands region.

“This morning (Wednesday ), I received 12 representations detailing instances of fallen trees blocking routes in Moate, Drumraney, Moyvoughley, Rosemount, Mount Temple and Ballymore.

“Westmeath County Council are responding to each instance as quickly as is possible and I have been in contact with the ESB who assure me that they too are also working diligently to restore power outages in the locality.

“It is vitally important that members of the local public, particularly those living in rural areas remain vigilant as trees which may have become loose during Storm Barra may fall in the coming times,” Cllr McCormack stated.
