With temperatures set to drop this week, the team at Bord Gáis Energy has put together some top tips on how to keep your house safe and warm this Winter.
Bord Gáis Energy’s Top Tips
Heat your home to at least 18 degrees or up to 21 degrees in the colder weather, particularly if any vulnerable person lives there.
Have chimneys for solid fuel burning appliances swept regularly. Gas fires and chimneys should always be inspected before each use, especially if they have not been used in long time.
Fit an audible Carbon Monoxide (CO ) alarm in any rooms where fuel burning appliances are fitted. Also, fit one within a 5 meters distance of bedrooms.
Insulate water and heating pipes in attics and in unheated areas to avoid dealing with troublesome burst pipes. Ahead of a cold snap, take a minute today to be sure of how to turn off your water supply so that when freezing conditions hit, you can act quickly.
Invest in a smart thermostat such as Hive Active Heating so you never have to arrive home to a cold house. You can control your heating and hot water tank from your smartphone allowing you to set the perfect temperature before getting home.
Lightly vacuum and test CO and smoke alarms on a weekly basis to ensure they are in working order.
If you have a prepay meter installed, ensure that you have sufficient credit to avoid heating being switched off.
Get your gas appliances serviced annually by a trusted Bord Gáis Energy Service Engineer.
