A large number of Athlone Boat Club junior members participated in the Irish Indoor Provinces competition held in the University of Limerick Arena by RowFit and supported by Rowing Ireland in recent times.
Athlone Boat Club junior, Edward Cleary, won the 1000 metre event in the Jr 16 category, while Adam Kenny achieved third place for the Jr 15 event which was also a 1000 metres race.
Anna O’Grady, sister of Irish International rower, Martin O’Grady, took gold in the Jr 14 category, giving an excellent and composed performance. She was placed in third position for most of the race but gained momentum for a fantastic finish to enable a first placed achievement.
Sarah Rockett took silver and gold in two Jr 13 events. Sarah put on a great display of rowing ability in both competitions, finishing strongly for her gold medal.
A well known name within Athlone Boat Club in recent years is Martin O’Grady. Martin, who is now rowing for NUIG, achieved first place in the Jr 18 event. Martin, over this past year, rowed for Ireland and won the Jr rowing championships while competing for Athlone Boat Club this past summer.
Martin will row for NUIG this year and all associated with Athlone Boat Club would like to wish him the very best.
“The hard work being completed this season is clear to see. Our new club captain, Nick Friel, has expanded the strength and conditioning for the junior rowers and we are seeing improvements week after week.
“Results such as this past weekend are a testament to the coaches for their commitment and the rowers for their hard work.
“The club would also like to congratulate the rest of the junior rowers who attended on the day and represented Athlone Boat Club with distinction,” Athlone Boat Club PRO, Padraig Hegarty concluded.
