Former Westmeath and Athlone senior footballer, John Egan, continues his recovery in Beaumont Hospital following a successful kidney transplant earlier this week.
John had been awaiting a kidney transplant upon the start of dialysis treatment and in an emotional social media post, John confirmed that he received the organ donation from his father-in-law, Ollie.
“On Monday, I received a life saving kidney from my friend/father-in-law, Ollie. Myself, Ollie and the kidney are all doing very well. I will be forever indebted to Ollie for this.
“I would also like to thank Dinah and Ollie’s extended family for their support over the last few weeks,” John noted.
In his social media post John also expressed his immense gratitude to his partner Traci, family members, friends and the medical staff for their care and support over the past years.
Concluding his social media message, John also encouraged those who read his emotional post to “become or at least consider becoming an organ donor.”
Diagnosed with kidney disease as a teenager, John continued to represent his club and county with distinction but blood tests taken in 2018 during his time with the Westmeath senior footballers showed that his kidney function had been reduced to below 30 percent - at the age of 28, John made the decision to retire from intercounty football and focus on his health.
