A retired midlands railway station is being transformed into a new tourist hub.
The old Streamstown station is being retrofitted with a cafe and rest facilities, to attract cyclists on the Mullingar to Athlone Greenway with work due to be completed by the end of the year.
Local Fine Gael Councillor, Tom Farrell, has welcomed the enhancement project, noting that when completed, it will be a regular attraction for those using the greenway.
“I am of the view that the development will be complete and in place for use in 2022. The retrofitting of the old Streamstown station is most welcome and is certain to attract visitors who use the greenway on a regular basis.
“Streamstown lies halfway between Athlone and Mullingar along the greenway route and in close proximity to the Hill of Uisneach. This enhancement project is most needed and I expect it to prove an immensely popular attraction next year,” Cllr Farrell stated.
