Expanded greenway project merits ongoing respect and support from local community

Athlone Deputy Mayor, Cllr Aengus O’Rourke is encouraging ongoing respect with regard to use of the greenway following the formal opening of the new extension from the white gates to the marina.

“As a family we use the greenway every week and I have noticed in recent months more and more people using it, which is wonderful. Now with the new section open to town it’s even better.

“I really hope to see secondary school children using the greenway to get to and from Retreat by bike or on foot - it is absolutely ideal for students living around the town.

“If students avail of the facility in the numbers that should use it, there is no doubt it should lead to a reduction in congestion in the Retreat area at peak school times. Not to mention the worthwhile exercise the children would be getting.

“ I would also urge people to respect the rules of the facility; cyclists and e-scooter users should not be going fast or racing, dog excrement must be picked up by owners and if anti-social behaviour is witnessed it should be immediately reported to the Gardai.

“The Greenway is for everyone, a recreational facility of the highest standard that will be there for generations to come. I hope that it gets the respect and the use that it deserves,” Cllr O’Rourke asserted.
