An Garda Síochána has added seven new fully-electric Hyundai Kona cars to its fleet.
It says the new EVs will be allocated to selected Garda Stations over the coming weeks as part of an extension of its battery electric vehicle (BEV ) pilot.
Dublin Garda stations Tallaght, Ballymun and Blanchardstown will each receive a Hyundai Kona EV, with Athlone, Ballyshannon and Claremorris Garda stations receiving one each. The remaining EV will also be used for Garda driver training in Templemore.
The electric Hyundai Kona has a claimed range of 350km. A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said the cars will be allocated to operational policing roles to assess their suitability in real world conditions.
“Information gathered through using these vehicles at Garda stations will assist in planning for the future purchase of more BEVs to meet An Garda Síochána operational fleet requirements,” the spokesperson said.
