The potential provision of a lifeguard service at Coosan Point during peak seasons was a prevalent motion addressed during the recent meeting of the Athlone-Moate Municipal District.
Raising the motion, Cllr Frankie Keena stated that recent stakeholder engagement pertaining to water safety issues at Coosan Point was to be commended.
“As Coosan Point continues to prove a popular amenity with swimmers and boating enthusiasts I believe there is a need to provide a lifeguard service at this location during peak seasons.
“If Coosan Point was a designated bathing area would it be in a position to avail of relevant funding towards the provision of a lifeguard service. As noted, Coosan Point is a prime amenity in our town and it is incumbent upon us to provide safety measures at this location, particularly during peak times,” Cllr Keena stated.
Concurring, both Cllr Louise Heavin and Cllr Aengus O’Rourke noted that the proposal of all water safety measures at Coosan Point should be explored.
In response, director of services, Mr Barry Kehoe, stated that there was no obligation on the local authority to provide a dedicated lifeguard service at Coosan Point.
“Although there is no onus on the council to provide such a service, there is an obligation on the local authority to ensure that there is a certain water quality at the location and to put in place relevant warnings when the need arises. Swimming is not advised at Coosan Point as there is a local issue with regard to the quality of water in the location due to the presence of wildlife.
“However, should Coosan Point become a designated bathing area in future times, it would be a matter for the council to decide upon the need for a lifeguard service at the location,” Mr Kehoe asserted.
