Pieta now hiring additional therapists for Midlands Centre in heart of Athlone

Pieta, the national suicide and self-harm prevention charity, has announced a recruitment drive to hire additional therapists for its Midlands centre in Athlone.

Pieta employs more than 200 qualified therapists and support staff across 20 locations nationally and its services are in greater demand than ever before.

In Athlone 27 percent of clients presenting to Pieta have attempted suicide and one in five have been bereaved by suicide. Some of the triggers identified included depression and anxiety (66 percent ), loneliness (31 percent ) and family issues (25 percent ).

Pieta Midlands Centre Manager, Josephine Kieran, welcomed the plan to recruit the additional therapists as demand for the service increases.

“Here at Pieta, we envision a world where suicide, self-harm and stigma can be replaced by hope, self-care, and acceptance and we welcome new therapists with the same vision. We have seen a 30 percent increase in calls and texts overall which shows that our services are needed now more than ever.

“I would like to acknowledge the support of the people in Athlone and – their generosity for the recent Darkness Into Light Sunrise appeal, proudly supported by Electric Ireland, has made this recruitment drive a reality. We are extremely thankful for this,” Ms Kiernan stated.
