Drinkaware, the national charity working to prevent and reduce the misuse of alcohol, is urging people to socialise safely this summer. As Ireland begins to open up and the weather improves, think about your motivations for drinking and remember to stay safe for yourself, your family and your community.
This past June Bank Holiday weekend, Drinkaware launched its ‘Make Memories’ summer campaign, encouraging people to stay safe. This summer we’ll all be able to socialise more freely, and we know that when people socialise, they are more likely to drink alcohol.
The ‘Make Memories’ campaign provides tips on how to socialise safely outdoors this summer. From alternatives to alcohol, how to protect yourself form the sun, environmental safety and how to drink mindfully. Information on outdoor drinking and a reminder to never drink and drive, the Make Memories campaign provides useful information for the public on how to make the most of this summer when socialising outdoors.
“The Drinkaware Index (2019 ) prior to Covid-19 showed that people typically drink alcohol for social reasons and many feel that alcohol makes social gatherings more fun. Alcohol is invariably a part of Irish social occasions and now that we’re able to socialise more we need to be careful of how, where and why we drink.
“We can’t behave as we might have before or as we might like, but we can still be sociable and be safe if we take some precautions and follow the public health guidelines. The information on our website is to help people consider what steps they can take to ensure this is a welcome, social and safe summer.
“We have all missed out on some major milestones over the past year, and this summer will be a time for creating memories to make up for lost time. But we do still need to be cautious. Socialise safely this summer, create memories with your loved ones and be mindful about why and how much alcohol you are drinking,” CEO Sheena Horgan, commented.
