Fine for rude rider who couldn't

A jockey who fell off his bike twice whilst trying to ride home drunk, and then abused his Garda rescuers left court €1,000 poorer earlier this week (May 13 ) after being found guilty of two public order charges.

Roman Loos (37 ), a French national living in Meadowbrook, Willow Park pleaded not guilty to the charges and defended himself with the aid of a translator.

The court was told how Loos was seen “in a very drunk state” by gardai in a patrol car at 10.40pm on Setember 28.

When they pulled up behind him, he fell off his bike and smacked his head off the pavement.

“He refused to tell us his name or where he lived,” said Garda Alan Hogan.

“He called us pr**ks and c**ts and wa***rs”.

“Was this in French?” asked Judge John Neilan.

“English, judge,” said Garda Hogan, whose testimony was then fully corroborated by his colleague, Gda Doyle.

Loos claimed in his evidence that the gardai never asked him his name but immediately handcuffed him and put him in the squad car.

He also alleged that he was assaulted in the arrest, that the garda elbowed him on the part of his head that he had just banged off the pavement.

“I was very upset. That's why I used them so bad words,” said Loos.

He admitted he was drinking but said the reason he fell off his bicycle was because the squad car pulled to a stop right in front of him.

He admitted to having consumed five or six pints and added: “I am not a good drinker. I should have walked home”.

He also conceded he did not report the alleged assault to a senior officer.

Judge Neilan found for the Gardai and convicted Loos on both counts, fining him €750 on the first charge and €250 on the second.

“You have been extremely mischievous in giving your evidence,” said the judge.

“Do you fall off your horse regularly?” he enquired.
