Athletics superstar, Eamonn Coghlan, will officially open the new Olympic-standard athletics facility at Athlone Institute of Technology this Sunday May 17 at 11.30am.
The former World and European champion will perform the ceremony before the start of the Athletics Ireland AAI Games and Senior Relay Championships which are being held at AIT this weekend.
Institute president, Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin, said that: “The new athletics facility is one of the finest in the country and was built to Olympic standard. It is highly appropriate therefore that the track should be officially opened by a giant of Irish athletics. Eamonn Coghlan redefined athletic prowess throughout his career and inspired countless numbers of young people to take up athletics. We are honoured that he has chosen to cut the ribbon and hope that this facility will in turn motivate young athletes in the Midlands to pursue their dream.”
The Olympic standard Mondo athletics track was completed in winter 2008, as part of a €2.5m investment in sports facilities at the institute. The track was laid by Thornton Sports and features high lux floodlighting.
