Toyota is to preview its mid-sized battery-electric SUV at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show, which takes place from April 21 to 28.
A rival for Volkswagen’s ID-4 and Kia e-Niro SUVs, it will be based on Toyota’s new ‘e-TNGA’ platform, that was jointly developed with Subaru. Toyota says is highly versatile and easily adaptable for a range of product types.
The basic architecture principle of e-TNGA works on the basis that key elements remain fixed while others vary. This approach allows variance in vehicle width, length, wheelbase and height.
The new model is expected to be similar in size to the current RAV-4, and it is likely to priced above that model line prices. Word has it that it may be called ‘BZ’, which stands for ‘Beyond Zero’.
The e-TNGA can also be defined with front-, rear- or four-wheel drive and with a wide-range of battery and electric motor capacities to suit various vehicle types and usage profiles.
Over 90 percent of all Toyota models sold in Ireland this year have been self-charging hybrid electric cars.
As a result, Toyota leads the mainstream market with the lowest CO2 average emissions of 87.08g/km.
