Dún na Sí launch World Wetlands Day photography competition

As part of World Wetlands Day (February 2, 2021 ), Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park in Moate are hosting an exciting photography competition.

This competition asks participants to submit their best personal photos of water courses, wetlands, and associated nature in their area and within their current travel restrictions.

The competition is open to entry from people of all ages from across the country. There are some great prizes on offer for the winning photos, with first prize including a €100 One4All voucher, a Dún na Sí annual car park pass and family membership for Dún na Sí Heritage park.

Entries can range from photos of seas and lakes, to rivers and streams, and to the plants, animals, and birds that are found in these special environments. The competition is kindly supported by the Local Authority Waters Programme.

World Wetlands Day falls on February 2 each year with the sole purpose to raise global awareness about the vital role of wetlands for people and the planet. This year, the theme is ‘Wetlands and Water’ with the campaign highlighting the contribution of wetlands to the quality and quantity of freshwater on the planet.

Dún na Sí is home to one of the few turloughs East of the River Shannon, making it a very unique aspect of the park. Also referred to as the ‘disappearing lake’, the turlough at Dún na Sí only fills up with water in the winter season, and disappears again by in spring time. Due to their unusual environmental conditions, turloughs are a wonderful support to biodiversity.

The Dún na Sí photography competition encourages people to celebrate wetlands and biodiversity in their local area, and to enjoy learning more about the natural ecosystems all around them.

To enter, please email [email protected] with a photo, caption/description, and your full name and contact number. The closing date for the competition is Friday, February 12.

Please note that Dún na Sí Amenity and Heritage Park ask that participants adhere to the current 5km Government travel restrictions in place, and follow all current Covid 19 safety measures and advice.
