Athlone Community Radio volunteer wins prestigious accolade

Athlone Community Radio volunteer, Kara Richards, was recently recognised for her persistent and diligent service to matters local media, when she was awarded a prestigious accolade during the Volunteer Ireland awards ceremony.

The Volunteer Ireland awards aim to shine a light on the remarkable achievements of volunteers across the country and afford an opportunity to give gratitude for their ongoing contributions within their respective fields.

Each Autumn, Volunteer Ireland ask the public to nominate an outstanding volunteer with Athlone Community Radio putting forward Kara’s name for the prestigious award.

Maeve O’ Healy Harte, Volunteer Co-Coordinator with Athlone Community Radio, stated that Kara was nominated in recognition of her incredible contribution during Covid-19

“Kara’s dedication to showcasing local music and talent through her radio show ‘LiveWires’ on Athlone Community Radio 88.4fm was exemplary. She kept the feel good factor of music on the airwaves, raising people’s spirits during the pandemic.

“Kara’s innovation of working with new and unknown musicians is remarkable. Her thirst for others to succeed is amazing. The otherwise neglected community of local musicians is her passion, to help them improve and succeed with their talent,” Maeve enthused.

Kara was presented with the award this past month and was taken completely by surprise as she was unaware that she had been nominated. She received an engraved trophy, a framed message from President Michael D Higgins, and a hamper of goodies with which to celebrate.

“This is an amazing boost for the radio station. Kara’s innovation of working with new and unknown musicians is remarkable. Her thirst for others to succeed is palpable,2 Irena Cvetkovic, Athlone Community Radio Station Manager, said.

She expressed her gratitude to The Sound Factory who have sponsored the ‘LiveWires’ programme since Athlone Community Radio commenced broadcasting 10 years ago.

Irena also extended her congratulations to Shay Hamilton of Athlone Tidy Towns. Shay won an award in the Environment and Animal Care category.

“We are all very pleased to see two awards coming to Athlone, Kara and Shay were two of the nominees of 800 people nominated this year,” Irena concluded.
