Mental health charity calls on the public to support Christmas appeal

Mental health charity, Aware, is calling on the public to ‘give the gift of hope’ this Christmas with a donation to help fund the organisation’s free support, education and information services for those impacted by depression, bipolar disorder and related mood conditions.

Aware has seen a dramatic increase in demand for its services as a direct result of Covid-19 and needs the public’s support to ensure the organisation can continue to deliver its vital services nationwide. All donations, big or small, are gratefully received and can be made at www.aware.ie

Since its inception over 35 years ago, Aware’s message has been one of hope and its impact on many who avail of its services is reflective of this message.

“The impact of Covid-19 on the nation’s mental health is likely to be significant and last far beyond the physical threat of the pandemic. Over the past nine months, we have recorded an increase of over 60% in calls to our support line, highlighting the impact of the pandemic and related socioeconomic factors on public wellbeing. People with pre-existing mental health conditions like depression may be more vulnerable but we are also seeing many people developing mental health difficulties for the first time. By donating to Aware this Christmas, you are giving a gift of hope, that will help us to be there every day for people who need support with their mental health. Every single euro counts and will contribute towards the support of another person, or delivery of another wellbeing programme.

“Mental health affects everyone and can have an impact on any one of us. As Aware only receives 25 percent in funding from the State, we rely heavily on corporate and public support to deliver our free services. We hope that the public will recognise the valuable work we are doing and choose to support our essential services that have a profound impact on families and communities throughout Ireland - and are needed now more than ever,” Dominic Layden, Chief Executive at Aware commented.

Aware’s free services include Support and Self Care Groups and a Support Line and Support Mail service, both of which operate 365 days a year.

Aware also delivers a range of wellbeing programmes designed to empower adults and senior cycle students with the knowledge and skills to build resilience and protect their mental health.
