The Monksland office of Athlone Credit Union has made a significant contribution towards the education enhancement of the pupils of Summerhill National School with the donation of Samsung tablets and cases valued in excess of €3,000.
Prior to the first Covid-19 lockdown, the principal and teachers had identified the area of IT as being in need of extra funding in the school.
Much of the annual grant goes towards repairs, maintenance and replacement of equipment. The Parents Association decided to look for sponsorship from a local business or enterprise and the Chairperson, Caroline Reid, approached the Credit Union with this in mind.
The Parents Association and the school staff agreed that establishing a link between the Credit Union and the school is a practical way to educate children about the benefits of saving from a young age.
Colman Hanly, supervisor of the Monksland branch of Athlone Credit Union (ACU ) congratulated the school and Parents Association on their wonderful initiatives to date. He acknowledged the importance of technology in this era of possible lockdowns and remote learning and emphasised the value of educating children from a young age on the benefits of saving for their future.
“Here at Athlone Credit Union, we see the importance of engaging with young people and supporting a community cause like this. This type of initiative is in our DNA. We wish the teachers and students many happy hours of learning with their new tablets and are just happy we could help,” Colman remarked.
Athlone Credit Union strives where possible to embrace community projects and the Board of Athlone Credit Union (ACU ) were pleased to support this initiative by funding over €3,000 worth of tablets and cases for Summerhill National School.
