The completion of much needed drainage works on Assumption Road has been formally welcomed by Town Mayor, Cllr Aengus O'Rourke.
"For several years now a number of houses on Assumption Road, on the eastern side of the road, have experienced considerable flooding at winter time, in their back gardens.
"In fact, it was so bad two years ago that the resting water was more than twelve inches high. I committed at the time to work with the Council engineers to find a solution.
"While these are private houses, much of the water coming into the gardens was coming from public ground. There had been mention of temporary works two years ago but I rejected that idea at the time as I felt that if temporary works took place the required 'major' job would never be completed and I am pleased now that we did that at the time.
"Today, we have a great scheme in place and I am confident it will do the required job. With the help of Paul Hogan, Council Architect and District Engineer, Pat Nally, we devised a robust drainage plan for the back lane which runs between the new estate Esker Park and the back gardens of Assumption Road.
"I am satisfied that this drainage work will greatly reduce the risk of flooding going forward. I would also like to thank the residents of Assumption Road for their co-operation and patience in this matter," the Town Mayor stated.
