Speed ramps required for Chapel Street and Parnell Square

In this month’s Athlone Town Council meeting, Cllr Mick O’Connell will be calling on the council to install additional speed ramps in Parnell Square and Chapel Street.

Commenting Cllr Mick O’Connell stated, “Following representations from members of the community in both areas, I am putting these requests forward to improve public safety. This is of great concern, especially where children are at play. A ramp on the Patrick Street side of Parnell Square would reduce the speed of traffic, and thus assist in preventing accidents in the area. Speed here is also a concern for residents who park their cars outside their houses.”

Commenting on Chapel Street, Cllr O’Connell added “The section of road here that is of concern is just where the road narrows after the Dean Crowe. There is street-side parking here which should in theory slow traffic down. However some residents who have parked their cars there have had their mirrors clipped and they are concerned about the speed of traffic through the narrow section of road. I am hopeful as the road is narrow that this ramp would be installed relatively quickly as the costs should be low.”
