Rahara National School is now enrolling for the forthcoming academic year, 2020/21.
A rural school based in South Roscommon which can effectively adhere to social distance measures, Rahara NS provides three large rooms, a large play area and a football pitch, with each school day commencing at 9am.
Rahara NS boasts two mainstream class teachers and one special education teacher. The low pupil-teacher ratio in Rahara NS is a huge advantage to pupils and allows teachers to easily identify individual talents and the unique needs of each student, offering a more personalised educational experience.
Furthermore, the school affords the option of supervised play-time for all junior and senior infant pupils from 2-3pm daily. This gives parents more flexibility as they only have one pick-up per day from Rahara NS.
The school also hosts a Homework Club which is supervised by local Montessori teacher, Teresa Nally, and operates from 3-4.30pm, Monday to Thursday. Between the extended infant opening time and the Homework Club, Rahara NS is truly offering a great package to busy parents.
All pupils are afforded the opportunity to get involved in many initiatives. Previously, the senior pupils of Rahara NS have achieved great success in the SEAI ‘One Good Idea’ competition on four consecutive occasions. Also, the whole school in conjunction with the local community, An Taisce and Galway 2020, participated in ‘Project BaaBaa’, a project based on the history of sheep and the traditional usage of wool.
The Green Schools programme plays a very important role in Rahara. The school is currently working towards its ninth Green Schools Award for Global Citizenship-Travel. The pupils have engaged in field-trips to the Ailwee Caves in County Clare to learn about caves and different environments and they also visited a Tullamore Castle to learn about engineering in conjunction with Engineers Week.
Rahara NS prides itself on keeping the school clean and tidy and was previously awarded ‘Best Hanging Baskets and Window Boxes’ in the Roscommon County Council Tidy Schools competition. The pupils are very proud of this achievement as the pupils used their own home-made compost and planted only ‘pollinator friendly’ flowers.
Sport also plays a very important role in the South Roscommon school, boasting a large playing field, yard and indoor hall. The pupils have coaches for soccer, gaelic, swimming and tennis. Pupils enter into Cumann na mBunscol competitions and FAI Soccer competitions.
