Gardaí make substantial drugs discovery in local residence

Following an operation by Athlone Gardaí supported by the Garda Air Support Unit a house was searched by Athlone Gardaí at 8pm on the May 24 at Fardrum, Athlone on foot of a warrant under Section 26 (Cultivation ) Misuse of Drugs Act 1977/84.

During the search Gardaí discovered 14 cannabis plants and 530 grams of cannabis in various containers or parcels. The drugs were seized by gardaí and have a street value of €21,780.

One (Irish national ) male in his early 40s was arrested for an offence contrary to Section 15 Misuse of Drugs Act 1977/84, detained under Sec 4 CJA ‘84 at Athlone Garda Station. The matter remains under Garda investigation.

“This is another great Operation and detection by the Athlone Gardaí team during the Covid-19 pandemic, and illustrates our vigilance to the activities of criminals during this period. While our focus has been diverted to community engagement to help prevent the spread of Covid-19, we remain determine to prevent and detect criminality. This operation was the culmination of work by Athlone Gardaí, who utilised national services such as the Garda Air Support Unit to assist in the Operation,” Superintendent Aidan Minnock, commented.
