Athlone Town to evoke memories of milestone Milan fixture

Athlone Town will evoke memories of the milestone AC Milan UEFA Cup fixture as they host a club fundraiser to raise finances towards the completion of two additional dressing rooms at the Lisseywollen stadium.

The club has evolved in recent seasons and now fields eight teams (seven at national league level and one in the Midland schoolboys/girls league ) in competitive setting on a regular basis.

With such development comes the need to enhance facilities at the stadium and funds raised from the virtual 'Lisseywollen to San Siro' walk, to take place from May 31 to June 5, will be afforded towards the completion of the dressing rooms project, as a return to playing action moves closer.

During the fundraising initiative, the club aims to retrace the footsteps of the great 1975 team by virtually completing a 4,000km journey return journey from Athlone to Milan and are asking all those interested in partaking to complete a walk, run, cycle or simply donate to upgrade facilities at Athlone Town Stadium.

Those who participate are encouraged to don the club's blue and black colours and can relay their activities through the relevant GoFundMe page or Athlone Town's various social media platforms with regard to distance covered.

In 1975, Athlone Town AFC played Italian football giants AC Milan managed at the time by former Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni, in the old UEFA Cup (now Europa League ). Athlone Town claimed a famous 0-0 draw at home before valiantly losing 3-0 in the second leg in the San Siro Stadium.
