Roscommon Arts Centre is working on brightening up Circular Road with a new exhibition of self-portraits by children planned for the doors and windows of the centre this June.
'This is Me' is an open invitation to children from pre-school to sixth year students to draw a picture of themselves for an ever-changing exhibition throughout June as part of Roscommon’s Crinniú na nÓg celebration which takes place on Saturday, June 13.
Crinniú na nÓg is a strand of the Creative Ireland Programme and is a national day which celebrates youthful creativity. This year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrations are being re-imagined with projects such as this taking place throughout the country.
The criteria for submitting a portrait for 'This is Me' are now listed on www.roscommonartscentre.ie and the closing date for entries is Wednesday 10th June. Exhibition information has also been posted in the window of the arts centre and on their facebook page, which details how to submit (email only ), the size of the picture, so parents are encouraged to check these out before sending in any work.
Roscommon artist, Sian Costello, has also developed an online portrait tutorial which was released on National Drawing Day for children with hints and useful tips for anyone interested in entering and this can accessed via Roscommon Arts Centre’s facebook page and on the website.
Creative Ireland is an all-of-Government five-year initiative, from 2017 to 2022, which places creativity at the centre of public policy. Roscommon Arts Centre 'Studios Workshops & Kitchen Tables' programme
Though its doors may be firmly shut, Roscommon Arts Centre is continuing to work behind the scenes, rolling out online programming initiatives and exploring new ways in which to connect with both artists and the public.
One such programme, 'Studios Workshops and Kitchen Tables', invites the public to join some of the artists, educators and writers in residence that the centre is working with during 2020 for a home/studio visit.
Facilitated by Naomi Draper via zoom, to date artists Mark Garry and Margo McNulty have both joined in the live sessions, speaking about their practice, discussing what they are currently working on and talking about previous shows. Informal and relaxed, there is always the opportunity for everyone in the zoom room to ask questions and actively participate in the session if they so wish.
'Studios Workshops and Kitchen Tables' takes place every other Tuesday morning at 12pm and other participants will include Andy Parsons, Paul Hallahan, Joanne Laws and Sue Rainsford. Anyone interested in attending, can pre-register their interest at: [email protected].
